You play an amnesiac man marked with the tattoo XIII who becomes the prime suspect in the assassination of the U.S. president. With a safe-deposit key and few memories to guide him, he tries to uncover the conspiracy and clear his name while pursued by government agents and killers.
The first-person campaign mixes gunfights with infiltration. You can use firearms, silent takedowns, and improvised weapons such as chairs or bottles; some encounters also involve hiding bodies or using a hostage as cover. Gadgets including a grappling hook, lockpick, and listening device appear along the way.
Missions move through varied locations and alternate between action and stealth, with the story revealing more about the conspiracy as you advance. Cel-shaded graphics, comic-panel cutscenes, on-screen sound-effect lettering, and visual panels during some headshots give the campaign its graphic-novel presentation.
Players often praise XIII’s cel-shaded comic-book presentation, calling out its panels and visual effects as distinctive, and many also enjoy its espionage story and soundtrack. Some find the blend of stealth and shooting and the varied missions entertaining, while others say the gameplay feels dated. Reviews also repeatedly mention frustrating checkpoints and PC control or compatibility problems.
