Set amid the fragmented politics of 1920s China, Rise of the White Sun puts you in charge of a faction competing for influence and territory. Play as a warlord, political movement, guerrilla group, or other faction, each with its own goals and approach.
Manage provinces, raise and equip troops, negotiate with rivals, and send characters on military or political missions. Officers and armies have loyalties of their own, and soldiers may disobey or desert when their needs are neglected.
Resources are scarce, and control depends on more than battlefield victories: you also manage relationships with local social groups and the people serving under you. Campaigns include conventional expansion as well as subversion, such as building influence in a city and supporting an uprising.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight its unusual focus on warlord-era China, the range of factions and playstyles, and the way loyalty, scarcity, and unreliable armies create unpredictable campaigns. Several also praise its historical research and the stories that emerge from managing competing ambitions. Other reviewers find the systems hard to understand, particularly because of the interface, tutorials, and limited explanations of action outcomes.
