Overlord II puts you in the role of a dark ruler facing the Glorious Empire, a regime that threatens your lands and their inhabitants. You lead an unruly minion horde rather than fighting alone.
In third-person action and strategy, you direct four minion types: Browns fight up close, Reds attack with fire, Greens specialize in stealth, and Blues can revive fallen minions. Send them into combat, loot and pillage, or use them to operate siege weapons.
As you advance, choose to dominate settlements or destroy them, build up your Netherworld, and equip your minions. Their mounts, along with set pieces such as ship combat, catapults, and sections where you possess a minion, add further ways to tackle missions.
Players often enjoy the distinctive mix of direct combat and minion command, especially coordinating the four minion types to fight, sneak, and carry out tasks. Black comedy and the chance to play an unapologetic villain are recurring draws, as are additions such as mounts, siege weapons, and ship sections. Many reviews also describe returning to the game for its atmosphere and fond memories, while some comparisons find the sequel less compelling than the first game.
