When Drill Knight and his crew steal Shovel Knight’s loot, he pursues them into a deep, collapsing underground well. You guide Shovel Knight through a series of regions as he searches for the thieves and their treasure.
Each run sends you downward through vertically arranged rooms assembled from crafted sections. Jump, slash, use the Shovel Drop, and dig through terrain while navigating enemies, hazards, secrets, and boss encounters. Speed Shovel mechanics let you clear large amounts of dirt as you descend.
Collect treasure and run-specific Relics, then return to camp to buy permanent upgrades, outfit Shovel Knight, and take on quests. The expansions add guild quests and challenges, along with Knightmare Mode, which becomes available after the main adventure.
Reviews are divided. Players who enjoy the game often point to its digging-focused platforming, Shovel Knight-style presentation, music, and the appeal of taking another run or tackling harder challenges. Others find runs too repetitive, upgrades insufficiently varied, or the difficulty frustrating.
When Drill Knight and his dastardly digging crew blast apart Shovel Knight’s peaceful campsite and steal his loot, he grabs his trusty Shovel Blade and starts tunneling after them!
