Nocturnal

You play as Ardeshir, a soldier of the Enduring Flame returning to his island home of Nahran after it has been engulfed by a mysterious Mist. He must cross the island, confront the danger spreading through it, and uncover what has happened.

This linear 2D action-platformer combines side-scrolling traversal, sword combat, environmental puzzles, and sections that demand quick movement. Ardeshir can ignite his sword at sources of fire; its flame pushes back the Mist, harms shadow-born creatures, lights torches, and activates mechanisms. The flame lasts for a limited time, so keeping it alive shapes how you move through dark areas.

Defeating enemies and exploring can yield ash to offer at Phoenix statues, unlocking skills and bonuses such as improved health or new attacks. The island also contains secrets and areas to investigate, while the story is presented through brief encounters and found notes.

Players who enjoyed Nocturnal often point to its fire-sword mechanic, which links combat, traversal, and exploration, and to the visual effects and atmosphere created by fire against the darkness.
