In the Rivals of Aether universe, four heroes venture beneath the steampunk town of Julesvale to investigate its caverns and uncover their history. Story Mode follows their separate journeys through several underground biomes.
Battles use a dice-drafting system: dice are rolled and chosen in turn, then assigned to stats before each hero uses abilities. The four heroes have different skills, while equipment and items let you shape their approach to fights.
Story Mode sends you back to town between dives, where you can talk to townsfolk and spend gold on gear. You can collect journal entries as you explore; Challenge Dungeons instead offer randomly generated events and fights across the biomes in a single run, with a leaderboard based on your remaining gold.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight its dice-drafting battles, which make turns feel like tactical choices or puzzles, and the different play styles of the four heroes. Character designs, pixel art, music, and Aether-world details also receive recurring praise. Some reviewers, however, find the campaign short or encounters repetitive, and disagree on whether combat remains engaging or becomes slow and overly difficult.
