Spore follows a species through five evolutionary stages: Cell, Creature, Tribe, Civilization, and Space. You guide its development from a small organism toward an intergalactic civilization, with the option to begin at later stages.
In the Cell and Creature stages, gather food and develop your organism as you encounter other species. Use the creature editor to shape its body, then choose how it interacts with others, from forming alliances to fighting.
Later stages shift to caring for a tribe, developing a civilization, and exploring space. Creation tools let you design creatures, vehicles, buildings, and starships, while your choices carry through the species’ progression.
Players often value the freedom to create unusual creatures and guide a species through several distinct stages, with many describing the game fondly through childhood memories. Some reviews say the later stages feel shallow or repetitive, and many complain that Steam-version online features, including sharing and downloading creations, are difficult or unavailable to access.
