This collection brings together Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Play as Sonic and other characters as you race through zones, avoid hazards, and oppose Dr. Eggman's plans. The Plus edition also includes 12 Game Gear Sonic titles.
The games are fast-paced 2D platformers built around running, jumping, exploring routes, and collecting rings. Anniversary Mode presents the games in widescreen with unlimited lives and coins that can be used to retry special stages; Classic Mode uses the original resolution and limited lives.
Choose from Story Mode, missions, boss rushes, and Mirror Mode, which reverses the levels. The collection also includes animated scenes, a museum with artwork and music, and unlockable extras. In the Plus edition, Amy is playable in the four main games, alongside Tails and Knuckles.
Players who enjoy the collection often praise the classic platforming games, especially having them together with widescreen play and Anniversary Mode’s more forgiving lives system. Missions, animated scenes, extra characters, and museum material are also appreciated. These positives are frequently tempered by complaints about bugs or performance, changes to Sonic 3’s music, and the collection’s price.
