Across two games, you play as Snake on missions to infiltrate enemy territory. Rather than fight every guard, you use stealth and the environment to move through guarded bases and complete your objectives.
Explore connected areas, watch enemy patrols, avoid detection, and collect weapons, rations, key cards, and other equipment. The first game also has you rescue hostages; in the second, you can crouch and crawl, distract guards by knocking on walls, and use a radar to track enemy positions.
Finding the right items and routes opens access to new parts of each base, while radio conversations provide story and clues. The games also tell a wider military story, with the second exploring Big Boss’s motives and the fate of soldiers without a nation.
Reviewers often enjoy seeing the series’ early ideas take shape, and many single out Metal Gear 2 for its more developed stealth systems, story, and soundtrack.
