Max’s careless wish leads to his younger brother Felix being taken by a monster into a strange, hostile world. Max follows him, taking on the role of a young adventurer trying to find and rescue his brother.
The game is a side-scrolling platform adventure in which Max runs, jumps, climbs, and avoids hazards while solving environmental puzzles. His magic marker lets him draw features such as pillars and vines to change the terrain and reach otherwise inaccessible places.
As the journey progresses, Max gains additional marker abilities, including ways to manipulate water. Levels introduce these tools and later combine them, mixing puzzle-solving with timed platforming and chase sequences. Levels also contain collectibles to find.
Players frequently praise the magic marker for giving the platforming and puzzles a distinctive, hands-on twist, and many find the challenges enjoyable without being too difficult. Colorful scenery and the game’s charming adventure also come up often. Some players wish the campaign were longer, while others criticize the marker puzzles as repetitive or too limited in their solutions; difficulty and drawing controls are also occasional complaints.
