The Local is a first-person movement game set in a large, playground-like world. Players build speed and navigate its spaces using sliding, wall-running and climbing, rail grinding, air strafing, and bunny hopping.
Play solo in Timed challenges with more than 15 time trials, take on Orders and chase high scores, or use Zen to practice and explore. Multiplayer adds Capture, a capture-the-flag-style mode, and Infection, where players infect others or try to avoid infection.
Players can create levels for Timed, Capture, Infection, and Zen. Time trials and high scores give players goals to pursue as they refine their movement and find faster routes. The game supports solo play and online multiplayer, including proximity chat and a public server browser.
Reviewers often enjoy the fluid, speed-focused movement and the challenge of improving times, finding new routes, and mastering advanced techniques. Some also highlight the level editor, soundtrack and visual style, and playing modes with friends. Opinions on the modes and learning experience vary; some reviewers find the tutorials unclear, the mechanics difficult to learn, or online play quiet.
