In the waning years of the Northern Wei Dynasty, General Anu and her Han captive, Chu Qingqing, travel to Dunhuang after hearing of a stone statue said to grant blessings. When the merchant who held it is found dead, a suspected thief and the spirit within the statue draw them into a supernatural mystery.

Some value the story’s exploration of desire, power, identity, and family, with Anu’s storyline and the historical setting standing out for particular reviewers. Others find the symbolism and emotional motivations difficult to follow, so reactions to the writing and characters vary.
