You play as Roy Becket, a young pilot drawn into a war between humanity and an ancient mechanical alien race. With an ally who escaped the aliens, he takes control of the Astebreed mech and fights to protect what remains of humanity.
Combat combines forward-firing shots, lock-on attacks against multiple targets, close-range sword strikes, dashes, and EX attacks. Your health can recover after you avoid damage for a time, and sword strikes and other attacks can destroy some incoming bullets.
The camera shifts between vertical, horizontal, and behind-the-mech views as battles unfold. Difficulty options, an Arrange Mode, stage selection, and score multipliers offer different ways to play, while gallery material provides additional artwork and story details.
Reviewers who enjoyed Astebreed often praise its vivid effects, mech designs, soundtrack, and cinematic shifts between shooting perspectives. They also appreciate combining lock-on fire with sword attacks, including using the blade to clear bullets. Some find the game approachable, while others criticize its short campaign, story dialogue during combat, or control scheme.
