In a floating world called Cocoon, a group of strangers are branded enemies of the state and caught up in a crisis tied to their fate. They must evade the forces pursuing them as their journey leads between Cocoon and the wild world of Pulse.
The campaign follows mostly linear routes, punctuated by story scenes and enemy encounters. Battles use an ATB command system: you direct one character while the others act under AI control, then shift the party between roles to respond to threats and build enemies’ stagger gauges.
Characters develop through the Crystarium, where they advance in combat roles, and weapons and equipment can be upgraded. Later, a wider area on Pulse adds exploration and monster-hunting missions alongside the main story.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its character arcs and emotional story, as well as its soundtrack and visual presentation. Many also find the role-switching battles engaging once more options open up, valuing the need to adjust party roles and tactics to changing fights. Responses to the linear structure and combat vary across the reviews.
