Set during the Crusades in Europe and the Middle East, the game puts you in charge of a kingdom surrounded by ambitious rulers and religious powers. Your aim is to survive their demands and rivalries while building a lasting legacy.
Manage relations with neighboring kingdoms, which remember your behavior and may become allies or enemies. Religion also shapes politics: at yearly gatherings, rulers and religious leaders can condemn one another, halt wars, or call for crusades, while you try to sway the outcome with persuasion, bribes, threats, and other tactics.
Recruit and replenish armies, research, and send generals to fight as you expand your territory. Scenario mode follows character stories, while Sandbox mode offers an open-ended campaign; choices in one mode can affect later play in the other.
Players who enjoy the game often value its approachable take on grand strategy, humorous dialogue, cartoon character art, and the mix of warfare, diplomacy, and religion. Some appreciate its campaign stories and lighter systems, while others find the strategy or combat shallow; recurring criticisms include repetitive late-game play, slow waits, and frequent dialogue or animations.
