Gambonanza is a single-player chess-inspired roguelike played on compact boards. You control pieces that move like chess pieces, but the goal is to capture every opposing piece rather than checkmate a king. Each encounter presents a new board and enemy setup to solve.
Between encounters, spend money on pieces, Gambits that alter rules or piece effects, and upgrades for individual board tiles. Tile effects can protect or trap pieces, among other changes, while an off-board reserve lets you hold extra pieces for later deployment. Mini-games can also offer upgrades.
Runs progress through successive encounters and boss challenges. If too many turns pass, tiles begin to crumble and can take pieces with them. Losing a run means starting over, while continued play unlocks additional Gambits and difficulty levels.
