Play as Peter Blood, a physician whose wrongful accusation and enslavement set him on a path through the Caribbean, or choose another character for a more open-ended start. You can serve a colonial power or chart your own course as a pirate, privateer, or trader.
Sail between islands on a global map, trade goods, raid ships, explore towns and ruins, hunt for treasure, and take on story and side quests. Naval battles can lead to boarding actions, while on land you fight with weapons and recruit companions and officers.
Develop your character through attributes, skills, and equipment, and build up your crew, ships, and fleet over time. Your choices of character, nation, and approach shape how you take on the Caribbean’s missions and conflicts.
Players who enjoy the game describe an absorbing, open-ended pirate sandbox, praising its atmosphere, freedom to choose a career, and long-term character and fleet progression. Others find the experience hampered by quest bugs, punishing combat, unclear objectives, and dated or awkward controls and presentation.
