In a world split apart by the Fracture, you play a Portal Knight traveling between islands through portals and confronting the forces threatening Elysia. Choose a Warrior, Mage, or Ranger, then customize your character as you explore.
Explore biomes, caves, and dungeons; gather materials; complete quests for NPCs; and fight enemies in real-time combat. Use collected resources to craft weapons, armor, tools, and other items, then take on powerful boss creatures.
Level up to unlock talents and improve your character, while building and furnishing homes or larger structures on islands of your own. Play solo or explore and build with up to four players online, or use two-player split-screen; Creative Mode offers a separate way to construct freely.
Players often enjoy exploring islands, building, and progressing their characters, with co-op—especially playing with family or friends—frequently adding to the fun. Reviewers also describe the game as colorful and approachable. Some find combat and later progression repetitive or grind-heavy, and others criticize DLC-locked content, inventory management, or lost progress.

| Multiplayer | Portal Knights supports single-player and cooperative multiplayer. Official store text states 4-person cooperative multiplayer online and 2-player split screen. Reviews also report LAN play, Steam friends joining, local co-op, and dedicated/private server support, but player travel is generally tied together: players on the same session must stay on the same island/world, and one player's travel can move everyone. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Steam Workshop is mentioned for sharing Creative Mode creations, not multiplayer gameplay changes. No provided text confirms multiplayer gameplay mods. |
