Set in 2171, the game follows engineer Dylan Ramsey after an orbital elevator is destroyed and conflict escalates between the rival U.C.S. and O.C.U. powers. Players take part in the resulting war as a Wanzer pilot.
The campaign sends players through linear missions in varied locations, including cities and frozen environments. Combat centers on third-person Wanzer battles with ranged weapons, missiles, melee attacks, and boosting; some missions also include on-foot combat and other action sections.
Players customize their Wanzers by changing parts and equipping weapons and attachments, then adapt their loadouts for missions. Battle skills can add effects such as corrosive or piercing shots, while the E.D.G.E. system boosts the Wanzer and slows enemies. The game also includes team-based online matches for up to four players per side.
Players who enjoy the game most often highlight the feel of Wanzer combat and the ability to customize a mech with different parts and weapons. Some also appreciate the varied action set pieces or return to the game for nostalgia. Reviews differ sharply, and positive comments often come alongside criticism of the story, mission restrictions, or technical problems.
