Set during World War II, the campaign puts you in command of Allied squads beginning with the D-Day invasion of Normandy. You lead them through battles against German forces in missions focused on objectives such as attacking, defending, and taking strategic positions.
Combat centers on small squads and tactical decisions. Use cover and terrain, position units, flank or suppress enemies, and choose appropriate troops and vehicles to counter threats. Resource points captured on the map support your forces, while weapons and explosions can destroy buildings and reshape the battlefield.
The game includes a single-player campaign, skirmishes, and multiplayer battles. This Legacy Edition also provides access to the updated Company of Heroes entry in your library; the supplied description directs players to that version for online play.
In the supplied reviews, players often praise the tactical squad combat, especially the emphasis on cover, positioning, flanking, and choosing counters over simply massing units. They also value the destructible environments, the WWII campaign’s cinematic presentation, and battles that feel tense and replayable. Some reviews report launch or stability problems, and others feel the visuals or controls show the game’s age.

| Multiplayer | The store description states 2-8 player multiplayer competition via LAN or Internet. Reviews describe online multiplayer, skirmish against AI, PvP, PvE, co-op, team formats such as 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4, and playing with AI teammates. The long description says the latest non-legacy version should be used for online play. |
| Multiplayer & mods | The game is moddable and has Steam Workshop support. Reviews mention multiplayer-related mods, custom maps, and that all players need the same custom maps for custom-map play. Several reviews say mods and multiplayer support are tied to the newer Steam version rather than the legacy version. |
