This collection pairs Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) with Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR). In 999, nine strangers kidnapped by the mysterious Zero must navigate a deadly game and search for a way out while trying to learn why they were chosen and whom they can trust.
Between story scenes, explore locked rooms, inspect objects, find and combine clues, and solve puzzles to progress. Choices lead to different routes and endings; playing through branches reveals new story details and opens further paths.
VLR continues the escape-room visual novel format with a new group and the Ambidex Game, where players make alliance-or-betrayal choices that affect progress toward escape. It adds more branching routes and two puzzle difficulty settings, while the collection’s remastered 999 includes updated graphics and Japanese and English voice acting.
Players often praise the games’ twisting mysteries and the way branching routes gradually reveal more of the story, alongside escape-room puzzles that give the visual-novel sections an interactive counterpoint. Some particularly enjoy 999’s focused story and puzzles, while opinions on VLR are more divided: its larger, more complex story appeals to some, but others find it slow or repetitive.
