Streets of Rogue is a top-down roguelite set in a procedurally generated city. You play as a character with distinctive abilities and work through city levels toward the goal of becoming mayor.
Each level gives you mission objectives, but leaves the approach open. Use character traits, items, and the environment to sneak past guards, hack systems, bribe or persuade people, fight, or set rival groups against one another. Residents and factions can react to events, creating new complications.
Runs progress through successive levels, with missions and character-specific goals shaping what you do. Characters, traits, items, and optional mutators change the available strategies; play alone or in online and local co-op for up to four players.
Across the supplied reviews, players often enjoy how different characters change the way missions play and how objectives can be solved through stealth, hacking, persuasion, or force. They also praise the unpredictable interactions between city residents and factions, which can turn plans into chaotic street fights, and many find that variety gives them reasons to replay or team up with friends.
Streets of Rogue is a rogue-lite about player choice, freedom, and anarchic fun. The game takes inspiration from fast-paced top-down rogue-lites like Binding of Isaac and Nuclear Throne, and adds free-form, experimentation-driven, emergent gameplay elements of RPGs like Deus Ex.
Rather than taking place in a dungeon, the game is set in a functioning, procedurally generated city, where complex AI informs denizens from all walks of life, who are just trying to get by in their daily activities.
In order to progress, the player will need to accomplish specific mission goals in any way they see fit through use of their special character traits, items, and the environment.
Will you play as a soldier who shoots first and asks questions later?
A stealthy doctor who uses chloroform and tranquilizer darts to silently take down the opposition?
A genial bartender who can talk his way past the most intimidating of guards?
Or how about a hyper-intelligent gorilla, rescuing other caged gorillas to form a small mobilized gorilla army?
