ToeJam and Earl crash-land on Earth and must find the scattered pieces of their ship to get home. Players explore connected levels, searching for rocket parts while encountering helpful and hostile Earthlings.
Exploration and avoiding danger take center stage. Presents offer unknown effects until opened, and players can investigate their surroundings, use items, and learn how Earthlings behave to get through each run.
Choose from nine characters with different play styles, and play alone or in co-op for up to four players. Runs use changing level layouts; experience improves stats, while repeated play can unlock characters, hats, presents, and other content. The HyperFunk Zone also includes a rhythm mini-game.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its nostalgic return, playful style, and unusual exploration-focused gameplay, with several calling out co-op as especially fun. Some also appreciate its music and the variety of characters and unpredictable presents. Critical reviews mention difficulty spikes, persistent enemies, control or multiplayer frustrations, and a few find the remake’s changes less appealing than the original.
