In a post-apocalyptic world overrun by infected, you lead a human colony trying to survive. Build settlements, grow the population, and secure enough land and resources to withstand the threat.
Balance housing, food, energy, and other resources as you expand. Train troops, clear infected from nearby territory, and fortify the colony with walls, towers, and other defenses. The game runs in real time, with pausing available for placing buildings and issuing orders; noise can draw infected toward your forces and colony.
Survival Mode puts you on a randomly generated map and challenges you to endure for a set period. The campaign adds varied missions, a technology tree that develops across the campaign, and hero-led exploration of infected locations.
Players who enjoy the game often praise the tense colony defense, careful planning, and the satisfaction of holding back large infected waves. Survival Mode and custom maps are recurring sources of replayability, while the campaign receives more mixed reactions. Reviews also frequently describe the difficulty as unforgiving, with long attempts making mistakes especially costly.
