In the fantasy land of Etheria, choose one of four hero classes and defend against waves of invading enemies. Each class has its own attacks, abilities, and defenses.
During missions, spend mana to place towers, traps, and other defenses, then join the fight directly as enemies attack. Adjust your setup between waves and coordinate roles with up to three other players, or play solo.
Earn experience and loot from missions to develop heroes, skills, defenses, and equipment. Higher difficulty modes, survival missions, challenge maps, and boss fights offer further tests and rewards.
Reviews often praise the mix of tower-defense planning and direct combat, as well as experimenting with different heroes, defenses, and gear. Co-op and split-screen play are frequent sources of fond memories, and some players enjoy returning to the game or its long-term progression. Opinions differ on ongoing updates and paid DLC: some welcome continued support, while others criticize the amount or cost of new content. Several reviews also describe late-game progression as a substantial grind.

| Multiplayer | Dungeon Defenders supports single-player and multiplayer. Official store text states 4-player online co-op and 4-player local co-op via splitscreen, with dynamic mixing of local and online players and players able to join or leave at any time. It also supports PvP Deathmatch. Reviews additionally mention other PvP modes and claims of 4 to 6 players on a map, but those claims are not confirmed by the official description. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Steam Workshop support and the development kit allow user-created missions and maps. Reviews state Open/local mode allows modded items and Workshop maps, while Ranked online is the main moderated mode and cheating can lead to bans. Modded play appears separate from ranked progression. |
