Heroes of Hammerwatch is a rogue-lite action-adventure. Explore and battle your way through procedurally generated levels on your own or with up to 3 friends.

Choose a hero class and venture into the Forsaken Spire, a dungeon of procedurally generated levels. Fight enemies and bosses, avoid traps, and search for puzzles, secrets, and loot as you try to climb farther.
During each run, find items that shape your character’s abilities and collect gold and ore. You can send resources back to town during an expedition; if you die before securing them, they may be lost. Use what you bring home to improve your hero and develop the town.
Heroes gain experience and retain their progression between runs, while town buildings unlock upgrades that support future expeditions. Seven base-game classes offer different abilities and playstyles, and you can play alone or in co-op with up to three friends. After completing the tower, New Game+ raises the challenge.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight the satisfying progression of improving heroes and the town, trying different classes and builds, and tackling runs with friends. Several also praise its replayability and loot-driven character builds. A recurring criticism is that resource gathering and upgrades can demand extensive repetition, with some players finding later runs grindy or monotonous.

| Multiplayer | Heroes of Hammerwatch supports solo play and online co-op. Officially, players can play alone or with up to 3 friends, for 4 players total. Multiple reviews state the player cap can be increased with a console command, but this appears unofficial and can cause instability. There is no evidence of PvP. Multiplayer is online-only, with no local co-op, no split-screen, and no LAN support mentioned. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Steam Workshop is supported, and mods disable achievements. Reviews mention a JoinAnytime mod that allows mid-run joining/reconnecting, which is not a default feature. Mods can alter multiplayer behavior but are unofficial. |
