Eliza is a visual novel following Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey, a former technology developer who returns to work after a three-year absence. As a human proxy for the AI counseling service Eliza, she meets Seattle clients and reads aloud the responses generated for them.
Players follow conversations with clients, colleagues, and people from Evelyn's past, learning about their concerns and the company's plans for the program. Dialogue choices shape some exchanges, while Evelyn's role often requires her to deliver the AI's words rather than speak for herself.
As the story unfolds, Evelyn considers her past and possible futures, with choices near the end leading to different conclusions. Kabufuda Solitaire is also available as a card-game diversion.
Players who respond positively to Eliza often value its reflective story about AI counseling, mental health, and the people affected by technology, as well as its character-focused conversations and emotional weight. Voice acting is repeatedly praised, with art and music also appreciated. Some reviewers find the experience too linear or light on interaction, and opinions differ on its pacing and endings.
