Lead a band of mercenaries through the dark-fantasy region of Gloomhaven, taking on quests and making choices that shape a branching campaign. Play alone or with up to three other players, guiding a party of two to four characters through dungeons and other dangerous locations.
Combat is turn-based on hex-grid maps. Each round, choose two ability cards for each mercenary and use one card’s top action and the other’s bottom action. Plan movement and attacks around enemies and the terrain, while managing your limited cards: losing them over the course of a battle can leave a character exhausted.
Between missions, prepare your party by changing ability decks, buying equipment, and developing characters with levels, perks, and enhancements. The campaign includes story missions and branching paths; a separate Guildmaster mode offers additional digital missions and character stories.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its demanding tactical decisions, where carefully combining card actions and coordinating a party can make close scenario wins satisfying. Reviews also appreciate the range of characters and builds, and the digital version’s handling of setup and enemy actions. Experiences with online play vary, with many reviewers reporting connection and stability problems.
