STEINS;GATE ELITE follows a rag-tag band of tech-savvy young students who discover the means of changing the past via e-mail using a modified microwave.

As student Rintaro Okabe and his friends experiment with a modified microwave, they discover they can send messages into the past. Their experiments draw them into a conspiracy involving SERN and John Titor, who claims to come from a dystopian future.
This is a story-focused visual novel presented with animated scenes drawn largely from the anime, alongside newly created sequences for some endings. Players read dialogue and make choices, including responding to messages on Okabe’s phone; the phone interactions are more limited than in the original visual novel.
Choices can lead the story along different routes and toward multiple endings, as the group’s experiments affect the world lines they encounter. Progression centers on following the conversations and making decisions rather than action-based challenges.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its science-fiction story, characters, and emotional turns, and some appreciate seeing the story presented through animation, including scenes made for routes and endings. Others enjoy it as a way to revisit the narrative. Criticism frequently focuses on content cut from the original visual novel, the reduced phone system, and reused or mismatched animation.
