Set between the successor kingdoms of Alexander the Great and the rise of the Roman Empire, Imperator: Rome puts you in charge of an ancient state. Choose a nation and guide its fortunes through expansion, diplomacy, and internal politics.
Manage provinces and populations—including citizens, freemen, tribesmen, and slaves—whose culture, religion, and satisfaction affect your state. Characters can govern provinces, command armies, and influence politics; your approach also varies with your government, whether a republic, monarchy, or tribal system.
Develop provinces with buildings, roads, and defences, and manage trade in goods that provide local benefits or can be exchanged. Wage wars with armies and fleets, choosing battle tactics and drawing on cultural military traditions; expansion can also bring unrest, rebellions, and rivalries among your leaders.
Players who enjoy the game often praise its ancient setting and the satisfaction of expanding a state, developing settlements, and managing population and political systems. Many describe the Invictus mod as adding welcome depth and regional flavour. At the same time, reviews frequently lament that development stopped, and opinions differ on whether the game’s systems feel rewarding or repetitive and difficult to learn.
