The Powder Toy is a 2D sandbox where you place different substances and watch them interact in a simulated environment. There is no fixed objective; you decide what to test, build, or set off.
Experiment with materials such as gases, liquids, powders, and electronics. Create structures and landscapes, design circuits or reactors, and see how different elements behave when combined or exposed to heat and pressure.
The simulation models factors including air pressure, velocity, heat, and gravity. You can pause to add or change elements before resuming, browse creations shared by other players, and use Lua scripts to add custom elements.
Players often enjoy the open-ended experiments, the range of materials and their interactions, and the freedom to build everything from reactors and circuits to landscapes—or simply cause a reaction and see what happens. Some also value browsing community creations and returning to a sandbox they remember. A few reviewers find the systems difficult to learn, and some report slowdowns when many particles are active.
