Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen

Hakuowlo awakens gravely injured, unable to remember his past and wearing a mask he cannot remove. Taken in by villagers, he becomes part of their community and eventually leads them against threats from the local nobility.

The story is told through extensive visual-novel scenes, mixing village life and character interactions with political conflict and warfare. As Hakuowlo’s role grows, the people and world around him—and questions about his forgotten past—come into focus.

Between story sequences, players command comrades in turn-based battles on grid maps. The campaign combines party recruitment and character growth with timed Chain Attacks and cooperative strikes.

In this sample, players often praise the story, character cast, worldbuilding, and soundtrack, with some describing the emotional scenes and late-story developments as especially memorable. Tactical battles are a mixed point: some find them enjoyable and a welcome change from reading, while others consider them too simple. Slow pacing and extensive reading also put off some players.
