Set during the 1916 Battle of Verdun, CONSCRIPT: Director’s Cut follows a French soldier searching for his missing younger brother. The top-down, pixel-art survival horror setting draws its danger from the battlefield and its soldiers.
Explore connected trenches, towns, forts, and battlefields; search for supplies; and solve environmental puzzles to open new routes. Combat uses World War I firearms and melee weapons, while scarce ammunition, health, and inventory space make it important to plan encounters and decide what to carry.
Progress by finding equipment, improving weapons and inventory, and learning the layout of each area. The Director’s Cut includes difficulty options and choices between conveniences such as unlimited saving and expanded inventory or stricter survival-horror limits; multiple endings and unlockables offer reasons to revisit the campaign.
Players who enjoyed the game often highlight its oppressive trench atmosphere, pixel-art presentation, and sound design, as well as its depiction of war’s human cost. Many also appreciate the classic survival-horror mix of exploration, puzzles, resource management, and tense combat. Some players, however, find the repeated travel between areas tiring, and opinions on combat and difficulty vary.
