Players take the role of John Blade, commander of HardCorps, as he confronts scientist Elexis Sinclaire and the threat to Freeport City. Hacker JC and rookie officer Jessica Cannon join him in a futuristic city facing mutant attacks and corporate power.
This first-person shooter centers on moving through industrial districts, streets, and secure facilities while fighting human enemies and mutants. The arsenal includes a pistol, shotgun, and automatic weapon with alternate fire, alongside grenades and melee attacks.
Combat rewards accurate shots, including hits to specific body areas, and the environment can provide hazards or objects to use against enemies. A dynamic difficulty system tracks how the player performs and adjusts the challenge; exploration also reveals hidden supplies and secrets. The game was designed as an episodic series, with this installment forming its first episode.
Players who enjoy the game often highlight its satisfying shooting, brisk action, and detailed Source-engine environments, including objects and settings that respond to interaction. Its futuristic atmosphere and main-menu music are also recurring favorites, as is the adaptive challenge for players who like tense fights. Some reviews find that system frustrating, and players frequently note the brief campaign and unresolved story.
