You arrive on the remote island of New Wirral, where people and strange creatures share an unfamiliar world. To search for a way home, explore the island and record creatures onto cassette tapes; playing a recording lets you take that creature’s form in battle.
Fights are turn-based and usually pit two allies against two opponents. Elemental interactions can cause status effects or change a creature’s type, while collectible stickers let you equip and swap moves and passive abilities. Once your bond with a companion is strong enough, you can fuse your two active forms during battle.
Explore caves, solve puzzles, find dungeons, and use creature abilities such as climbing, gliding, swimming, and dashing to reach new places. Along the way, meet companions, help them with personal goals, and build relationships that strengthen your team and its fusion abilities.
Many supplied reviews enjoy experimenting with the turn-based battles, especially the elemental effects, flexible move builds, and mid-battle fusions. Reviewers also often single out the soundtrack, creature designs, and rewards for exploring New Wirral; some appreciate the companion stories and relationships as well. Criticism varies, but recurring complaints include slow battle animations, awkward traversal puzzles, and limits on online co-op.

| Multiplayer | Cassette Beasts supports single-player, local co-op, and online multiplayer. Local co-op allows two players to explore and battle together with player two controlling the story companion. Online multiplayer supports trading, 1v1 battles, and cooperative Rogue Fusion/raid-style encounters, but reviews indicate online play is mostly parallel exploration rather than full story co-op. |
