You play as Ampersat, an @-shaped warrior-mage sent to recover the language stolen from Gentlheim by Lord Z. Venture into dungeons and towers filled with letter-shaped creatures, freeing captured letters so the villagers can communicate again.
Explore handcrafted stages with traps, secrets, and occasional light puzzles, then fight using melee weapons, ranged attacks, and spells. Collect gear and loot, earn experience, and develop your character through abilities and equipment upgrades. Stages can be tackled in different orders.
Gentlheim serves as a hub where you can shop, rest, and upgrade town facilities. An optional Well offers procedurally generated delves for loot, while drop-in local co-op lets a second player control a fairy that attacks alongside Ampersat.
Players who enjoy Ampersat often point to its unusual letter-based premise and retro presentation, along with the appeal of collecting gear, building a character, and clearing varied dungeon areas. Some find it a fun, approachable game for a few sessions; others describe the combat and level loop as repetitive or the progression as less rewarding than they hoped. Several reviews also mention that bright colors and effects can be hard on the eyes.
