REPLACED follows R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence inhabiting a human body, through an alternate, post-disaster 1980s America. In Phoenix-City and its surrounding districts, the journey brings the AI face to face with the Phoenix Corporation and a society where people are treated as resources.
Move through a cinematic side-scrolling world by exploring, climbing, jumping between platforms and solving environmental puzzles. Some sections call for stealth, as R.E.A.C.H. avoids security lights, turrets and drones; others lead to combat encounters. Scannable objects, records and collectibles reveal more about the setting.
Combat combines melee attacks with dodges and counters, including responses to incoming bullets. Attacks build charge for ranged shots, while armor-breaking moves deal with protected enemies. Between missions, a hub offers conversations and side quests; exploration and optional tasks can yield character upgrades and additional story details.
Players often praise the detailed 2.5D pixel-art presentation, cinematic framing and dystopian atmosphere, with the synth-driven music also earning frequent appreciation. Some reviews are drawn in by R.E.A.C.H.’s identity-focused story and the world revealed through characters and records, while others enjoy the counter-based combat. Criticism commonly focuses on slow or repetitive stretches, platforming that can feel unclear or unresponsive, and combat that some players find clunky or repetitive.
