In a future where the Death Stranding has brought supernatural threats into a shattered America, you play as Sam Bridges, a courier tasked with reaching isolated settlements and reconnecting them. Deliveries gradually draw people and places into a shared network.
Travel is the central challenge: choose routes across rivers, mountains, and unstable ground while managing cargo weight and balance. Prepare equipment such as ladders and ropes, use vehicles where they help, and adapt to hazardous weather. Stealth and combat are available when you encounter threats, but traversal and survival remain central.
As you progress, you unlock more gear and ways to build infrastructure, including roads and bridges. The asynchronous Social Strand System lets structures and helpful items left by other players appear in your world, and lets your own creations aid theirs. The Director’s Cut also includes additional tools, missions, a firing range, and racing activities.
Many reviewers who connect with the game praise how route planning, cargo management, and difficult terrain turn deliveries into a deliberate problem-solving journey. They also frequently value the indirect cooperation of using and leaving structures for unseen players, along with the story’s themes of isolation and connection, its striking landscapes, and music. Reactions to the slow pace and repeated delivery loop vary; some reviewers find them meditative and rewarding, while others find them tedious, and several describe the story as confusing or overly drawn out.
