Choose the War Mage or Sorceress and defend fortresses, mines, and portals from waves of orcs and other monsters. The story campaign can be played alone or with a friend.
Fight enemies directly with weapons and spells while placing traps and guardians along their routes. Combine defenses to control crowds, protect multiple entrances, and stop monsters from reaching the exit.
Unlock and upgrade traps, weapons, and other gear as you progress. Alongside the campaign, Endless Mode challenges you to survive increasingly difficult waves; additional modes, difficulty settings, and scoreboards offer other ways to play.
Players who enjoy the game often praise the mix of active combat and tower defense, especially setting up trap combinations and adapting them as enemy waves arrive. Co-op stands out as a fun way to divide defenses and improvise with a friend, while some also enjoy the cartoon humor and replaying levels to refine strategies. However, many supplied reviews report crashes or disconnections, often at the end of a level or during co-op.

| Multiplayer | Orcs Must Die! 2 supports single-player and 2-player cooperative multiplayer. Co-op is available online and via LAN, and the campaign and Endless Mode can be played solo or with one other player. There are leaderboards for single-player and co-op, but no evidence of PvP. |
| Multiplayer & mods | Steam Workshop is supported. Reviews indicate mods exist, but there is no clear evidence they are intended for multiplayer compatibility; some reviews warn modded play can break progression, and one review says progression is disabled with mods enabled. |
