Ichiban travels to Hawaii in search of his mother and crosses paths with Kazuma Kiryu. Their intertwined stories unfold across Hawaii and Japan, drawing the two heroes and their companions into conflicts involving the people they meet.
Combat is turn-based, with party members able to move within a limited area on their turns. Positioning can set up back attacks, attacks with nearby objects, knockbacks and team combos. Jobs, inherited skills, equipment and party setup let players shape their battle strategies.
Explore city districts, take on substories and build bonds with party members while pursuing the main story. Optional activities include collecting and battling Sujimon, restoring a resort island, and playing familiar diversions such as karaoke and arcade games. Character growth comes through battles, jobs and equipment upgrades.
Players often praise the more tactical turn-based combat and the large range of side activities, which offer plenty to explore beyond the main story. Character interactions and Kiryu’s reflective moments also resonate with some reviewers. Responses to the story are mixed, with recurring criticism of its pacing and writing; some players also find the abundance of content overlong and object to New Game+ and other content being sold as DLC.
