Set in the ancient world, Total War: ROME II puts you in command of a faction competing for power and territory. Choose from Rome and a range of other civilizations, each with its own starting position and military forces.
On the turn-based campaign map, expand your holdings while managing provinces, buildings, the economy, diplomacy, and internal politics. Campaigns can focus on conquest or other goals, and the included Imperator Augustus campaign centers on the struggle for power after Caesar’s death.
When armies meet, take direct command in real-time land and sea battles, positioning and directing units against enemy forces. Develop your realm and military over the course of a campaign, or play a separate battle without managing a full campaign.
Players who praise the game often point to its large ancient-world campaigns, faction variety, and the shift from empire management on a turn-based map to commanding large real-time battles. Historical setting and replaying campaigns also recur as draws, and some players highlight the range of available mods. Criticism in the supplied reviews includes unpredictable AI and frustrating diplomacy or internal politics; a number of players also report crashes, loading problems, or compatibility issues.
