Take charge of a medieval faction and expand its territory across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the New World. Your campaign develops through a turn-based map, where each faction’s position shapes its opportunities and threats.
Build and improve cities, recruit armies, and manage diplomacy and religious politics as you compete with neighboring powers. Crusades, jihads, papal decisions, and other events can alter the course of a campaign.
When armies meet, switch to real-time battles to direct troops, formations, and tactics across the battlefield. The Definitive Edition also includes Kingdoms, with four additional campaigns set in Britain, Teutonic Northern Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.
In the supplied reviews, players repeatedly praise the campaign’s ability to generate distinct stories and the tactical battles, while also valuing the range of factions and the extensive mod scene. Many describe returning to the game over long periods; others note that its age shows in its visuals, controls, diplomacy, or battle behavior.
