After waking on the drifting station known as the Sarcophagus, you explore its strange, interconnected environments and encounter the inhabitants of a place caught in a repeating cycle. Environmental clues and conversations gradually reveal more about the station and your role there.
Exploration centers on collecting seeds and cultivating plants. Different growth patterns can create platforms and vines, open routes, provide useful fruit, or help connect distant parts of the world. You can experiment with where and how plants grow to find paths through the station.
Key events begin new cycles, returning you to earlier areas and resetting some abilities and resources. Plants continue to grow, while certain skills can be preserved between cycles. Close-range combat offers varied attacks, but fighting shares the focus with planting, puzzle-solving, and finding ways to interact with creatures.
Players who enjoy Ultros often praise its vivid, surreal art and atmospheric music, along with the unusual plant-based puzzles that let them alter routes and explore the world in creative ways. Some appreciate how the cycles and discoveries gradually change their understanding of the station. Other reviewers find the resets, backtracking, unclear direction, or extended gardening tasks frustrating, and opinions differ on how well the combat and visual intensity work for them.
