Boyhood's End is a science-fiction horror adventure set under the rule of R. Karellen, an artificial intelligence that rates people and influences their daily lives. Giovanni, who has the lowest human score, is bullied at school; eccentric high-scoring student Campanella becomes his ally when the school turns against him.
The boys take over a driverless train on the galactic railroad and set out for the Crimson Southern Cross. Their journey brings encounters with historical leaders, strange mysteries, and horrors as they confront ideas of what it means to be human and when childhood ends.
Players explore hand-drawn pixel-art environments, talk with characters, investigate their surroundings, and solve puzzles and minigames to advance. Animated conversations carry the character-focused story, while discoveries along the route reveal more of the world.
Reviews that praise the game often highlight its pixel art and animation, unusual sci-fi setting, characters, and story; some also enjoy the music and puzzles. Views on the narrative and later character direction are sharply divided. Recurring criticisms include frustrating minigames, bugs, and slow or uncertain chapter updates.
