In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

You play a space-station sanitation technician arriving after a sci-fi battle has left facilities covered in blood, debris, spent ammunition, and bodies. Your job is to restore the wrecked rooms rather than fight the creatures that caused the damage.
Use a mop and water buckets to remove stains, collect debris and remains for disposal, and operate tools such as a laser welder to seal bullet holes. A sniffer tool helps locate leftover mess, while equipment around each level supports the cleanup—and can sometimes add to it.
Assignments take place across different facilities and can include tasks beyond cleaning, such as sorting containers, handling employee tags, and filing an incident report for a better grade. Play alone or in co-op, save your progress, or use sandbox play to experiment with the physics; trophies from jobs can be displayed in a persistent office.
Players who enjoy the game often value the hands-on cleanup and the sense of accomplishment from restoring a messy scene, or use its long tasks to zone out. Reviews also praise the absurd physics mishaps and co-op sessions for creating funny moments, as well as the environmental clues that suggest what happened in each level. Others find the work frustrating, especially when physics creates extra mess or detailed scoring requirements extend a job.
