Cadence enters the NecroDancer’s crypt while searching for her father, where she must descend through a dungeon that moves to the music. You can also play as other characters, each with a distinct play style.
Move across a grid and attack by stepping toward enemies in time with the beat. Each enemy follows its own movement and attack patterns, so navigating rooms means reading their behavior while choosing when to advance, retreat, or strike. Weapons and other gear change how you approach fights.
Dungeon layouts and encounters vary between runs. Gather gold to buy equipment, and collect diamonds to unlock permanent upgrades; defeating bosses lets you advance deeper. The game also includes multiple characters and challenges, local co-op, and music options that include custom tracks.
Players often praise the unusual blend of rhythm and roguelike dungeon combat, especially the way learning enemy patterns can make battles feel satisfying and fluid. The soundtrack and the variety of characters and replayable runs are also recurring positives. Many reviews warn that the steep difficulty and repeated attempts can be frustrating, particularly before the timing and enemy patterns click.
