You play as a young fisherman's son on Estard, the world's only known island. With childhood friends, he investigates the Shrine of Mysteries and discovers that other lands have been sealed away by a malevolent force.
Stone fragments open portals to past eras, where the party investigates local problems, solves mysteries, and makes allies. Restoring each island in the past brings it back in the present, and the story unfolds through individual island tales linked by a larger adventure.
Explore towns, ruins, and dungeons, and fight visible monsters in turn-based party battles. Characters develop through vocations, each with its own skills and abilities; assigning two vocations at once lets them combine their abilities. You can also adjust battle speed, use auto-battle, and strike monsters in the field to defeat weaker foes instantly.
Players often praise the diorama-style visuals, the island-by-island stories and characters, and the smoother pace and convenience features. Some enjoy the shorter, more accessible adventure, while others feel that removed content, reduced challenge, and more guided exploration take away from the original’s depth. Voice acting, music, and the dual-vocation system also receive appreciation, though responses to the redesign and streamlining vary.
