Set seventeen years after Final Fantasy IV, the story begins with Prince Ceodore, son of Cecil and Rosa, joining the Red Wings as a new moon appears and monsters threaten the Blue Planet. Returning characters and new heroes each take part in the unfolding sequel.
The adventure is told across ten character-focused tales. You begin with Ceodore's story, unlock six other tales that can be played in any order, then continue through Kain's tale, The Lunarian's tale, and The Crystals.
Explore locations and fight in party-based Active Time Battles. Lunar phases change the strength of certain attacks and abilities, while Band abilities let party members combine their skills; these can be unlocked through story events or by building character affinity.
In the supplied reviews, players who enjoyed the game often valued seeing Final Fantasy IV's characters return and discovering what happens after the original story. Some also praised the character-combination attacks and the combat, while others found the sequel repetitive or its story uneven. Criticism frequently focused on repeated locations, grinding, pacing, and technical or difficulty issues.
