Sean sets out to save a life and confront those responsible for his predicament while investigating his father's kidnapping. Steve follows his own leads, and the two protagonists' stories intertwine across a single-player campaign.

Missions let you sneak through shadows, distract guards, tamper with lights, lockpick doors, and use alternate routes such as vents—or fight your way through. Enemies can investigate disturbances, call for backup, and coordinate when they suspect an intruder.

Prepare for each mission with weapons, ammunition, and gadgets, and modify firearms to adjust their performance. Build character skills as you progress; Sean can also use bullet time. Decisions, mercy, and other choices shape the campaign's ending.

Players often enjoy the freedom to shift between careful stealth and intense gunfights, along with tactical level choices, customizable weapons, and enemies that react to what happens around them. The soundtrack and demanding missions also receive praise. Some players find the challenge frustrating, and opinions differ on the story, enemy behavior, and how well stealth and combat fit together.
