You play as El Matador, a DEA special agent sent to dismantle a growing narcotics cartel across Central and South America. The campaign follows operations against the cartel and its leaders, against a backdrop of corruption and revenge.
Combat is built around third-person gunfights as you push through enemy-held locations. You can slow time during shootouts, dodging incoming fire and lining up attacks.
Use a range of weapons, from pistols and submachine guns to rifles and rocket launchers. Collect ammunition, health and armor as you move through settings including jungles, streets, clubs and docks; some missions also include allied agents.
Reviewers who enjoy El Matador often point to its direct, action-heavy shooting, slow-motion combat, weapon selection and short, old-school campaign. Some also appreciate its South American settings and cinematic crime-story feel. Others find the combat dated or frustrating, and several reviews report problems running the game on modern hardware.
